In This Chilling Interview, Carl Sagan’s Last Warning Gives Us Goosebumps

“If we are not able to ask skeptical questions to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we are up for grabs for the next charlatan (political, or religious) who comes rambling on.”

You may have heard of Carl Sagan from the series Cosmos, or from some of his other works. There is no denying that he had an interesting way of looking at science, and how it is viewed in our lives.

In his last interview, Carl Sagan brings up a scary point; if the general public does not understand science, or chooses not to, who does that leave to make the major decisions that deal with science and technology?

We live in a world where technology and science have become a major part of our lives, and are continuing to do so at accelerating rates. In the interview, Sagan asks if we should leave these matters up to congress, knowing that only a handful of the members actually have a scientific background. This being prominent even in today’s society and government. We live in an age where the President of The United States does not believe in global climate change when there has been scientific evidence of its existence.

“It wasn’t enough to enshrine some rights in the constitution or bill of rights, the people had to be educated and they had to practice their skepticism and education, otherwise we don’t run the government, the government runs us.” Carl Sagan goes back to when Jefferson brought this up, know what the consequences would be if we took it on the belief that everything we are told was true. We as the public have the right to be skeptical.

In this clip from Carl Sagan’s last interview with Charlie Rose done over 20 years ago, he warns us of the dangers of having a government that makes all the scientific and technological decisions for us. It is vital that we as the general population take some the matters into our own hands, and educate ourselves on what is actually happening in this world. Check out the clip to see what you think:
