Research Shows GMO Crops Now Banned in 38 Countries Worldwide

As you know, Monsanto has battled traditional farmers and ethical companies so they can win absolute seed control in the world of agriculture, but many countries will not accept this grim future!

Monsanto wants to spread genetically-modified crops across the world. Moreover, according to Wikileaks, they have the full support of the government – a gloomy concept to consider. However, much of the world oppose this monstrous monopoly of the people’s food supply. In fact, many countries have even gone beyond merely labeling GMOs but also banning their cultivation altogether.

As you know, not everyone accepts GMOs around the world. The question is which countries backed up their concerns about the safety of GMOs with actual bans? — Sustainable Pulse, a GMO news source, conducted the research which you can read below:

The following 38 countries banned GM crops on the governmental level. The countries top scientists, doctors, and environmental agencies backed their decision because of irrefutable science.

Of course, Monsanto claims that “science” helps them feed the world. But that lie has lived long enough. Nowadays bans on GMOs have become commonplace around in many countries, as Sustainable Pulse discovered.

In Europe 28 countries banned GM crops:

  • Azerbaijan
  • Austria
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Bulgaria
  • Croatia
  • Cyprus
  • Denmark
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • Moldova
  • the Netherlands
  • Northern Ireland
  • Norway
  • Poland
  • Russia
  • Scotland
  • Serbia
  • Slovenia
  • Switzerland
  • Ukraine
  • Wales

Countries that are a part of the European Union had an option to opt-out from growing GM crops through a European Commission rule passed in March 2015.

This ban targeted Monsanto’s corn MON 810 because other varieties of both corn or other plants were rejected across Europe.

In the Americas 4 countries have bans in place:

  • Belize
  • Ecuador
  • Peru
  • Venezuela

There are also four countries in Asia who have banned GM crops:

  • Bhutan
  • Kyrgyzstan
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Turkey

Furthermore, two countries in Africa also followed suit:

  • Algeria
  • Madagascar

You can find more information and detailed reports on each country here.

At this point, 28 countries still grow GM crops.

The USA produces 73.1 million hectares of maize, soybean, cotton, canola, sugarbeet, alfalfa, papaya, squash making them the largest grower.

Brazil comes second with 42.2 million hectares of cotton, maize, and soybean followed by Argentina with 24.3 million hectares of the same crops. Canada comes third with 11.6 million hectares of soybean, maize, canola, sugarbeet, then India with 11.6 million hectares of cotton.

Other countries growing GM crops include:

  • Australia
  • Bangladesh
  • Bolivia
  • Burkina Faso
  • Chile
  • China (where numbers are relatively small, and a showdown is brewing over the issue)
  • Columbia
  • Costa Rica (which has made recent efforts to become GM-free)
  • Cuba (which has mostly resisted U.S. pressure to forge deals for using more GM seeds, however)
  • Czech Republic
  • Honduras
  • Mexico
  • Myanmar
  • Pakistan
  • Paraguay
  • Philippines
  • Portugal
  • Romania
  • Slovakia
  • South Africa
  • Spain
  • Sudan
  • Uruguay.

Conclusion

You have heard the advice a million times before. Avoid GMOs. And now many countries chose to follow this advice and ban the cultivation of GMOs for their people. In fact, more countries do not use them than those that do. What’s more, they were also banned in Scotland – the home country of Monsanto’s founder Hugh Grant. So all these bans beg the question – if GMOs feed the world so well, then why have all these countries chosen to ban them? Stay informed.
