This Artist Upcycles Old Books To Make Imaginative Paper Miniatures [15+ Photos]

Pinterest fans know that there are many ways to repurpose old books. For instance, one could create a quirky stool with a bundle of books, or they could make a clever knife block — the options are limitless!

A unique way of upcycling books you may not have heard about is using the pages to create imaginative paper miniatures. This is what artist named Malena Valcarcel does.

The artist wrote on Bored Panda, “Working with paper doesn’t stop amazing me, the concentration in detail I put on all my peaces [sic] makes me feel free and very very happy.”

One of her creations is Hedwig, from the Harry Potter franchise. Valcarcel has also used old books to tiny tree houses, bookcases, and even tiny shoes. They are adorable, to say the least.

On her Facebook page, the artist explains: “I love books and I have been an avid reader all my life. I´m a paper artist and I tell my own stories using books as my canvases. I create these sculptures from books that have been thrown away for one reason or another.”

“Sometimes, I rescue them from refuse bins, secondhand shops that can’t move them, and even libraries that incinerate unwanted or damaged books to make room for new ones,” she continued. “In fact, I have developed such a reputation for repurposing books that friends bring me books they no longer want or need.”

Valcarcel sees beauty in ordinary objects, which is why she gives them “new lives as beautiful, incredibly unique works of art.” She wrote, “I can be inspired by a book I read, or maybe a specific passage of that book can inspire me to create a Book Sculpture. My art allows you to look at books in an entirely new light and may even inspire more visually-inclined people to start reading again.”

The artist does admit that it pulls at her heartstrings to cut up books. However, her artistry serves a purpose. She wrote,“Of course it would be wonderful if more books stayed on people’s shelves rather than landing in refuse bins. But for the ones that do, I transform them into a new story in a way to make people stop and appreciate, if just for a moment, the magic of books.”
