To the Friends Who Still Love Us Even If We Don’t Talk to Them Every Day

Thank you for knowing me so well—and for allowing me to know you so well—that it always feels like you’re with me, even if you’re on the other side of the world.

Thank you for genuinely lifting my spirits with unexpected calls, texts, and notes.

Thank you for always being an amazing human being, regardless of changing—and challenging—life circumstances.

Thank you for making it possible to pick up our friendship and relationship just where it last left off, even when years or decades span meetings.

Thank you for making it easy to believe that no matter what happens to either of us, we will always be there for each other in whatever ways become necessary.

Thank you for knowing exactly what kind of parties and get-togethers to invite me to.

Thank you for always trusting me even when I can’t explain why you should.

Thank you for helping me extensively—especially when I don’t actually deserve it.

Thank you for always being willing to do something a little crazy when I get the urge (and for encouraging it every once in a while).

Thank you for coming to visit me when I need to see you but can’t get away.

Thank you for loving me no matter how many bad decisions I make.

Thank you for helping me to grow and evolve into a better human being than I otherwise would have.

Thank you for all the countless things you haven’t done for me yet, but undoubtedly will in the near future.

Thank you especially for always being able to make me feel safe, and for always providing me with an alternative home whenever I need one.

Thank you for not allowing our friendship to wane (even when it would have been so easy for you to do so).

Thank you for always forgiving—and for always genuinely forgiving.

Thank you so much for never allowing me to completely give up, and for never allowing me to come close to hitting rock-bottom.

Thank you for allowing me to help you become the amazing friend—and the amazing human being—that you’ve become. I’ll never ever be able to fully reciprocate your love, but I’ll definitely never stop trying.
