Retired astronaut Edgar D. Mitchell, part of the crew of Apollo 14 flew to the moon in 1971, has died in a hospital in West Palm Beach, reports his daughter Kimberly to a local news agency. Ironically, yesterday was the 45th anniversary of the historic moon landing.

Michelle was selected to form part of the astronauts of the Apollo missions in April of 1966 when he was assigned to the fifth group. He served as support astronaut on the Apollo 9 mission and as a substitute for lunar module pilot of the Apollo 10 mission. In 1971, he was elected for the Apollo 14 mission as lunar module pilot. On Apollo 14, Edgar Mitchell was accompanied by Commander Alan Shepard and command module pilot Stuart Roosa. During this historic mission, the trio collected 100 kg of lunar rock samples and setting a record for the longest stay on the lunar surface (33 hours); and EVA (moonwalk) of 9 hours and 17 minutes.

Edgar Mitchell was also chosen as a substitute for lunar module pilot of the Apollo 16 mission.

In 1972, Mitchell retired from NASA and the US Navy. After his successful career as an astronaut, Edgar Mitchell became known as an important individual investigating the UFO phenomenon. Edgar Mitchell was the author of the books Psychic Exploration: A Challenge for Science and The Way of the Explorer. The Former NASA astronaut gave numerous lectures at different universities around the globe.

In 2008, he said in an interview that NASA had contact with aliens, who supposedly follow the archetypal pattern of being “small with large eyes and a relatively miniature head.” Edgar Mitchell also stated that our technology was not even close to that of the aliens, and if they were indeed hostile as some suggest, we would have been long gone.
