This Artist Photographs Unique Bodies to Fight Unrealistic Standards of Beauty

The last time you glanced at yourself in the mirror, did you nitpick the condition of your skin, judge your unruly hair, or give your muffin top a look of disgust? If so, it’s likely because you’ve been conditioned by society to view your body as a collection of imperfections, instead of a unique masterpiece.

One activist who is sick of this trend and seeks for people to celebrate their bodies rather than judge them is Francesc Planes. The 22-year-old photographer from Spain recognizes that beauty is subjective and that there are millions of pieces to the “beauty standard” puzzle. As a result, he took it upon himself to start a photo series entitled “Normal.”

For the series, the artist documents bodies that usually do not fit within the frames of idolized beauty. To make the subject exposed as possible, he photographs them in their most vulnerable state: naked.

According to Bored Panda, the idea behind the project is to celebrate the things that aren’t “normal,’ but are beautiful and unique. To say the series makes one uncomfortable is an understatement — but that is part of its purpose. Unless people feel compelled to re-assess their previously formed opinions, nothing will change.

Oftentimes, the rarest creations are the most stunning. Hopefully, this message is remembered as people peer at the photographs that follow and continue living their day-to-day lives.
